I struggle to say that a business is created, in the past tense, because creating a business never ends. Creating the business is constantly done. It’s a doing process. There are many ways a creative process can happen, though I argue there is one way in which the process of creating a business occurs.

Ultimately the business owner and business need to be able to work together as a happy duo with a healthy relationship. If the business owner is not working with the business’ best interests in mind, the business will suffer (and, as an extension, the community of clients for which it provides suffers too). The more you can respect the integrity of your business the better. As radical as it may sound, it’s helpful to think of a business as having its own life and identity. The more you can take care of your business as you would another person, like a child who needs constant supervision, the better. The more separate from your business you feel the better. To care for and respect your business, consider it as having its own life.

The belief that you are your business, will trap you in it! Every inevitable stumble your business takes, would become a personal failure of yours. Every personal challenge you face, would put your business under risk. Your business is going to fail, need to change, be rejected and be loved! The good news is that these good, bad and ugly moments may reflect your business and your effort as the business owner, but they don’t reflect you as a person.

As a business owner, you need a team around you to encourage and support you. Completing your business mission is still going to be hard work, it’ll take time, be risky and you’ll get fed up on bad days, but your support will help you get to where you want to be faster, safer and with fewer tears shed than if you went alone.

I'll talk about ten qualities that business owners need to grow a successful business. There will be more than ten qualities of business owners, and undoubtedly there will be successful businesses who have more than one business owner whereby one owner does not embody every quality I discuss, but another person on your team can compensate. My top ten qualities are not exhaustive and are my personal take on what makes a great business owner.
